SOP Thermoscientific FlashSmart Elemental Analyzer version 1.2

  1. Log into computer

  2. Click on “EagerSmart”

  3. Click on “CHNS”

  4. Click “OK” when box pops up

  5. From there select “Edit” from the top ribbon, and then select “sample table”

  6. From there select “Edit Sample” and then select “Clear sample table”, press “Ok” to confirm.

  7. After clearing out the sample table, select “Edit sample” again, and select “Fill sample table”.

a. Leave the sample name as is, this can be edited later.

b. For file name, use today’s date

c. No. of samples are the no. of samples along with standards that you are running.

  1. Enter the following information once the sample table is filled.

a. Line 1 of your schedule will be named “Bypass” and set “Type” as “Bypass”

b. Line 2 of your schedule will be named “Blank” and set “Type” as “Blank”

c. Line 3-5 will be named “STD1-3” and set “Type” as “Std”, then select the standard you are using from the list, and insert the weight of the samples in milligrams.

i. STD 1-3 will be the standards you run specific to your samples.

d. Line 6-7 will be named “Check 1-2” and leave “Type” as “Unk” and insert the weight of the samples in milligrams

e. Now insert your sample names and leave “Type” as “Unk” and insert the weight of the samples in milligrams

f. For the line after your final sample, name it “Check 3”, leave “Type” as “Unk” and insert the weight of the samples in milligrams

g. Select the last line, named “Check 3”, and then click “Edit Sample” from the options at the top and select “Insert empty line”

h. Empty line tells the system to stop running a sequence, so at the end of your sample list insert an empty line.

i. All of this information should match with your sample sheet.

  1. Exit out of the “Sample Table” window by clicking “OK” on bottom right of table, no need to save anything

10. After you insert your sample table, save as new method

a. Edit file name and add date

i. Make sure to save in PC OS(C) Flashsmart Data

ii. Make sure to save in your specific folder

11.  After saving your file, select “Recalculation” from the top ribbon, and then from the drop-down menu select “Reset Calibration Factors”, and then select “ok” for the next two prompts.

12.  Load your samples into the sample trays

a. Ensure your sample table matches the order of your physical samples

b. Sample 1, the “Bypass” sample will be added into its slot once the sample tray is connected to the machine as it will drop directly into the hole in the autosampler.

13.  Select “Edit” and click “Edit Elemental Analyzer Parameters”

a. If “Set Instrument to Stand-By” is checked, uncheck it and click “Send” on the same window

b. Click “OK” (Instrument standby light should turn off)

14.  Select “View” and click “View Elemental Analyzer Status”

15.  Click the tab “Special Functions”

16.  Click “Leak Test…” (only do if you have changed the consumables, or ask for help)

a. Make sure no boxes are checked and then click “Start” and wait 300 seconds

b. The volumes for “Carrier Flow” and “Reference Flow” should be under 5ml/min.

i. IF NOT, DO NOT CONTINUE

ii. If the O-ring is not seated flush with the sampler, it can cause leaks, consequently causing the leak test to fail. Recheck and reseat the O-ring with sampler and try the leak test again.

iii. If you are unsure ask for help.

17.  Exit “Leak Test”

18.  Wait 30 Seconds

19.  Click on tab “Detector”

a. Click “Auto-Adjust Level at 1000 uV”

i. This will usually be over 100 off if a leak is detected

20.  Click “Ok” to exit that window

21.  Ensure the column “Actual” is reading the number one less than when your schedule starts

22.  Ensure “Power On” and “Ready” lights on the machine are solid green

23.  Select “Run” and then click “Start sequence of samples” or “Start Single Sample”

a. Checkmark the box “Force To Standby”

b. Click “Start Now”

24.  Leave Computer logged in and leave program open
